TX16S firmware update

Post by FlyingDrMike »

I thought I would write this out and place it here so I don't have to remind myself of the process every time.

TX16S firmware update

There are two firmwares to update – Edgetx and the multimodule. Both should be done at the same time – and use different processes.

1] First download the firmwares:

EdgeTX is easy as it is one zip file with versions for all the supported transmitters. Download from https://github.com/EdgeTX/edgetx/releases/latest . Go to the bottom and click ‘edgetx-firmware-v2.11.3.zip’ (or later) for the firmware file and ‘edgetx-cpn- ……..zip’ for the updated companion (optional). Open the firmware zip file and look for the file starting TX16S. Copy this and paste in a folder for firmwares. I replace the latter part of the file name with the version number – so it becomes e.g. TX16S-v2.11.3.bin . This is easier to see the version and makes it list in order in whatever folder it is placed.

The multimodule needs the correct options to be selected. Go to https://downloads.multi-module.org/ . Now enter in the dialogue boxes:
  • Select a module: RadioMaster TX16S Internal Module (4-in-1)
  • Firmware Type: Air
  • Channel Order: AETR (or whatever you use)
Now click the ‘mm-stm-serial-aetr-air-v1.3.4.31.bin’ (or later) to download.

Each of the firmware types has a subset of the receivers it will work with. Do not select EU(LBT) it does not include non LBT receivers like older Frsky D8 receivers.

Note this step is only needed if the multimodule firmware has been updated.

2] Next step is to backup and the get the files onto the transmitter.

Turn on Tx. Connect to PC via top USB, select ‘USB Storage (SD). To backup simply copy the whole SD card. So ctrl+A to select all, ctrl+C to copy and ctrl+V to paste into folder named with the days date. Much simpler than messing with companion.

While connected copy the two firmware files to the FIRMWARE folder on the transmitter.

Now eject the transmitter drive, disconnect USB and turn Tx off.

3] Update the firmwares.

Turn on the Tx in bootloader mode (press power while T4 and T1 clicked towards each other). Screen will show ‘EdgeTX Bootloader’. Click ‘Write Firmware’ and select the tx16s-v2.11.3.bin (or later). Long press to start flash. Wait for bar to complete and click RTN to exit. Then select ‘exit’ that will put Tx in normal operating mode.

For the multimodule, with the Tx on (as from above) press SYS, select the SD card tab, FIRMWARE folder and then click the required firmware file and lastly ‘Flash Internal Multi’. ‘Flash device’ will appear and a bar progress under ‘writing’ and then message ‘Flash successful’. Click RTN twice to get back to normal screen.

Time to check models function as they should.
