Angry Birds

Post by Oatesmr »

We have a new project which aims to develop our combat theme. So far there are two versions of Angry Bird, a mid motor and a front motor. Both fly well, but the pig doesn’t! Watch this space. If you are puzzled ask your grandchildren! There will be an Angry Bird presentation at our club night 16th October at the Basingstoke Cricket Club, 19:30.

The Birds are easy to build from templates and look a bit like this :

I've had a few comments on the finish achieved on the Angry Birds, the strong colour, good even coverage and water resistant !

Its easily done - but best before assembly.

Paint or spray the exposed edges of the Hobbycraft foamboard with a varnish, pva wash or other protection to keep the foam core sealed.

Use common and readily available car spray paint in light coats to prevent runs in the finish. This paint adheres to the paper very well and can be quickly touched /over sprayed for effects and repairs.

PS This idea can be used on Depron and the like but you need a very good coverage of sealant, possibly two coats over the entire painted surface. Any error is ofc catastrophic !

Re: Angry Birds - Flying

Post by Easystealth »

For those that are wondering, These birds are quite easy to fly. The launch is best done at full power by holding the top of the bird, pointing it up at about 30 to 40 degrees and then giving it a good push upwards at about 30 degrees. it should get away nice and straight into a steep climb. Immediately level the nose and fly at a gentle climb until at a safe height.

Under power, it should be trimmed to fly straight and level at mid-power. It will then probably climb steeply on full power and then glide steeply down on low / no power.

It will roll and loop as well as generally fly around performing quite tight turns etc. For landing, throttle back and let it descend, controlling the rate of descent with the power and the elevator. It needs to land slowly with full up elevator but you do need to keep some throttle on to limit the rate of descent. Cut the throttle when it about 1 ft from the ground. Try this at height before the first landing!

Adding a streamer at the rear well below the wing makes it fly even better!
